The course of 2017 Moves In! Bike racks are all occupied.

I was overwhelmed by the energy of the campus as I was walking the campus to take some pictures. Sometimes I forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future global leaders. We found myself just using it all in while smiling at students and parents I have never met before. ( It could were only a little weird, but hey, I was caught in a moment). Suddenly, I wanted to travel back in its history, go back again to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as they were entering their dorms for the time that is first. Subsequently, we sensed an amount that is great of and a little bit of hesitation from parents because they struggled to let their kids go. It is apparent that this moment is just a milestone in all of the lives. Students look ahead to their next four years at USC and wonder at all the possibilities it could bring, while parents feel a sense of accomplishment because they were somewhat accountable for getting their kids to college. With all of these thoughts swirling on campus, I can realise why there were therefore many hugs going around.
throughout the welcome convocation today, speakers stood in front regarding the incoming course of 2017 and offered suggestions about how to take advantage of their own time only at USC. I want to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife College, stated during her message: be there. It’s not as easy as it sounds but you would have been a better individual being the sooner you are able to exercise it in your own life. Towards the incoming that is new at USC and current kids; I challenge you become present. Be there in your classes. Show up in your conversations. Be present while you do your research. Be present once you’re meeting people that are new. Be current whenever you write your personal statements. Be present when you study for your AP/IB tests. Be present when the tests are taken by you. Be there whenever you ask her/him down. Be contained in conflict. Be present in brand new challenges. Be present in all of one’s experiences that are new activities. Take it all in. Be present!
Hey Parents! Listen Up!
Parents play an essential role in the entire college process. Frequently times, moms and dads help subsidize some, if not all, of attending a college or university, and so are always here to ask those specific ‘parent’ questions you need to ask the tour guide when the last meningitis outbreak was? that you as students can’t be bothered with shmoop.pro (really mom, did)
Nonetheless, there are instances where moms and dads must have a back seat and allow their sons and daughters to inquire of the hard concerns. Here, we’ve a compiled a listing of ‘dos and donts’ about parenting during the college search and application process:
• Do assist your son or daughter know very well what they want for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial help, etc. locating a good fit for your specific wants and requirements is more important than the cachet of the name.
• Don’t gather every one of the information for them! Enable them to contact admission counselors and find out the relevant information for themselves. After all, they are going to be in college somewhere quickly enough, and it is important which they learn to navigate the process themselves.
• Do encourage your sons and daughters to go to university campuses, and have them on those trips! The easiest way to become familiar with an university or college would be to make the trip to campus.
• Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus tours, interviews, receptions, etc. Allow them get it done! This shows us that they are independent and mature.
• Do remind your sons and daughters that not getting in to their very first option school might seem just like the end associated with the globe at that moment, but that things work out and as they work hard that they will be successful wherever they go as long. And, encourage them to transfer if that organization remains towards the top of the list even with enrolling someplace else.
• Don’t fill their applications out for them! We can inform also it reflects poorly on the applicant. We understand that these are teenagers using and expect their applications to mention their true voice and style.
So the moral is: find a stability. Realize that your child is all about to attempt a life-changing journey and that beginning to just take ownership of the college application process is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured that we are here to answer those tough ‘parent’ concerns, even when they include where to send the care package.
